I'd be interested in the Shake Rattle and Roll specs/pricing versus a complete Tame the Beast treatment.  I don't want to eliminate anything in terms of exhaust etc., but the glaring resonances that occur below 100Hz (I sadly haven't sat down and tried to locate it) I view as non-productive sounds I could stand to bid farewell to.  If that makes any sense, lol.

In my NA and the GXP, the symptoms seem to be the same.  It's not a drone or a roar that I care much about. It's the buzz resulting from the not-all-that powerful sub, and also some random rattle (that I think the Backbone is going to help--I shall see) that I don't much care for.  It's definitely somewhat improved with the GXP, because now I sometimes turn off/down the stereo just to listen to the  car...heh

Smile

You'd be an ideal candidate for just using CLD Tiles to control panel resonance. Engine, exhaust and tire contact with the road all generate vibrations that cause the car's panels to resonate and most of them do so int the range around 100 Hz. Treating the panels with vibration damper drastically reduces the noise you are hearing.

When John and I test drove his car after we were done, he described his impression of the car feeling more solid. That's what he was talking about. The vehicle's panels are the closest thing to you and when they are "singing" that's what you are going to hear.

By removing the very thin factory installed damping pads (peel off very easily) and replacing them and adding more, the panels are now decidedly dead. The doors close with an authoritative sound and the tinniness is gone.

One issue to consider is the factory vibration damper on the floor - it's not great, but it looked like it would be a Censored  to get up. Since we were going to line the floor with foam and MLV anyway, it wasn't critical for our application. I added a few tiles to bare spots, but for a vibration damper only install it might be worth trying to get it up. Applying damper on top of damper doesn't do much.

I'll be reviewing what we used in the next few days and will be able to give a better idea of what is required then. This is the easiest type of deadening project and won't eliminate any of the fundamental car sounds.

Are you going to open Jonymac's car again and make templates for purchase or will we have to figure it out and cut up a sheet.

There will be a photo guide. Pre-cutting the materials would raise the price by a factor of 3 and it just isn't that hard. CLD Tile location is simple and they go on in one piece for the most part. The foam and vinyl get laid in place and cut to shape. The cutting doesn't have to be perfect or pretty since none of it is visible once the interior is put back in. Ninety percent of the effort is in disassembling and assembling the car. Figuring out what goes where takes some time, but that will all be done for you.

Yes, I think that's right up my alley.

Funny--both of you mentioned the door slam.  I guess I've noticed that, too.  The door makes its' hollow closing sound and I think, hmm...that's not how I picture that sounding!

Jmac I hope you took good notes, cause you know where I am coming to get help with mine. This time the Hooter's is on me. The boy really needs some work on his GTO, and could most likely turn Don on to a whole new bunch of customers. He is very active in the Capitol GTO club. I did line the doors with dampener already, but not the panels.

As far as what Don says about the templates - he is right - once you see the pics it is easy to tell what to do - it just takes some time to get the holes right, plus mine being the test car, there are some things we would probably do differently in the future.

Goat - more than happy to help - and if my wife is viewing this thread, I have no idea what you mean by hooters - is this some sort of aviary at the zoo or something?...

Don and I are working on the instructions - may take a couple of days to put together - he is figuring out the kit cost as well.

I drove my car 3 hours today to the mountains and LOVED every minute of it - even in the pouring rain.  The stock sound system is phenomenal - I could not have conceived of driving three hours with the catless DP prior to the work we did - night and day...

I saw this project happening first hand, and let me say that they were both working very hard.  I am so glad it worked out and is making a difference.  You have a beautiful car jonymac...I really liked it, and now I can say that I know what the shell of the car looks like.  There is a lot in there to rattle.

Here are some teaser pics - the silver squares are the CLD deadener tiles, the black stuff is the heavy stuff - vinyl sound barrier, the beige stuff is the nitrile closed cell foam... (May have to scroll left and right)

Jony, I have to pull my door panels very soon to put my handles back that are at JPM, what do I need to get to just do the doors while they are off, I have the inside skins covered with dampener already. By the way I am already testing a new catless tune from Lyndon, much better unless he gave you the same one, he did it for me Friday last week.

Check out the teaser pics I posted above - the doors take the dampener pieces on the inside of the outer door panel, then he fabbed a double layer of aluminum (aluminum flashing from home depot (i have some left over) to cover the large hole in the door sandwiched with butyl rope, then the vinyl goes on, then the foam.  Remove and throw out the egg crate and the plastic sheet. Doors are much more solid now.

I love the new tune - maybe you can look at mine and see if it is the same as yours - I believe you have the file.  The only thing is it burbles LIKE MAD when you let off the accelerator - I mean constantly - I like the burble, but this is like when you like ice cream, so you eat a gallon of it!! I have lots of dampener left, can't see pictures at work  crying

I am not sure which version of the tune you got, there are 3 catless that I know of. The first one I had burbled a lot but mellowed out after some miles. I just did a new one Monday.

I've given this quite a bit of thought and there are a few things I can do to make this easier and less expensive for everyone. I can pre-cut the mass loaded vinyl barrier to to the necessary sizes. This will cut down on waste and shipping costs. You'll still have to trim the pieces a little and cut out holes for clips and wire pass throughs, but it will be a lot easier for you to deal with this way.

Has anybody seen inside enough doors to know if they are all the same? If they are, I can make a fiberglass mold and layup access hole covers as needed - for those who don't feel like fabricating something themselves. I know I'd like to have a source of strong and lightweight covers for my projects and some of you may too.

With any luck I'll have prices for a variety of options worked out by the end of next week.

Don ; Its good that some triming is needed , for all the Cars don't have the same speaker systems .  So it not already cut out for all of them .Are there any other wholes that should have covers besides the Doors? If so can be pre-made as well.

I guess the big one at the top - a fiberglass roof would keep a lot of noise out Big Grin

Doors are really the only critical ones. Those gigantic 20 X 15 openings in the inner skins let noise of every frequency through. Sealing them also dramatically improves midbass response for whatever speakers are mounted in the doors, even stockers.

I have to find a new 3" exhaust band tonight, rubbed a hole in mine yesterday, start at Pep Boys and hope to find one somewhere. I don't have any door handles yet so going to wait so I can put it all back together, JPM stole my door handles. Maybe we can get together for some wings, do you know a good place?

I cheated, ordered the exhaust clamps (got a spare) from Amazon, free next day shipping. Be here when I get home tomorrow, going to dealer tonight to check diff, Dave noticed the overflow tube was missing.

NAPA carries wings?  Now I love that place even more!  Jim, maybe we can meet at "NAPA" for some wings weds night?  I just had a root canal this morning, so I am on liquids and vicadin for 24hrs!  It would be pretty hilarious to see me trying to eat wings and slobbering at the NAPA employees with a numb mouth!
